Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
