A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
