Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
